Joseph P. Kennedy's signed Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States card, No. 1, stamped B238038, Boston, dated February 1960. Signed "Joseph P. Kennedy" in blue ink. Card certifying that Senator John F. Kennedy had paid the dues of Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., Post No. 5880. Further membership card information on verso, with no thumbprint present. Measuring 4" x 2.25". Light wear and soiling from use. Boldly signed. Overall very fine.
Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. (1888-1969) was the patriarch of the Kennedy family, father to John and Robert Kennedy. During World War I, he was an assistant general manager of a Boston area Bethlehem Steel shipyard, and it was through this position that he became acquainted with Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Kennedy would go on to serve under President Franklin D. Roosevelt as Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Chair of the U.S. Maritime Commission, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom.
