A GEORGE I BURR WALNUT SECRETAIRE CHEST ON CHESTCIRCA 1720The fall front drawer opening to an arrangement of pigeon holes and small drawers185cm high, 108cm wide, 58cm deepA near identical chest on chest was sold in these rooms, 30th March 2021, Lot 239 (£27,500 including premium). Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Various old splits, chips and some losses. Various old repairs to veneers and mouldings with some sections re-secured or replaced - see images. Various old veneer repairs. Timber has a previously been cleaned by a restorer. Some fading to colour overall. Some splits to the sides with filler applied to help disguise. Lock plates vary from one another. No key present, all locks are open. Some minor evidence of old worm to backboard and interior of carcass. Handles and escutcheons are possibly original, there is no evidence of alternate holes. Some of the handle loops to the lower section are replaced and are a slightly different shape. There is some variation the fixtures used to secure the handles to the interior of the drawers. Two screws have been used to secure each handle to the fall front drawer. When the fall is open, two plugged holes are visible. One of the catches to the fall of the fitted drawer is a replacement and the tip of the hooked arm is detached. Some strips of later tape applied to backboards.Feet are well matched replacements.Two screws used to secure each handle of the fall drawer. When the fall is open plugged holes can be seen. The interior of the secretaire drawer with some old ink stains. Section of mounding to one side of the cornice is detached and lacking. Section of moulding to one side of the 'waist' is detached but present. Small section of veneer adjacent side of the fall front drawer is lacking.
