Ancient Chinese Terracotta Terracotta Ceremonial Horse with TL Test

[ translate ]

Ceremonial horse; China, Wei dynasty, 386-537 AD Polychrome terracotta. Attach thermoluminescence certificate. Dimensions: 41 x 41 x 18 cm Figure made in a round package standing on its four legs located on a small base. The modelling of the horse presents a realistic and detailed anatomy that can be seen in the face and the walking clothes with which it is dressed. These types of pieces used to be part of the funerary equipment of the Wei dynasty, since the horse was a symbol of rank and belonging to the high sphere in the social hierarchy. The piece still preserves remains of the original polychrome applied as a slip on the piece of clay and not glazed. The Wei dynasty dominated northern China in the period of the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589) , being the first of the northern dynasties. This period followed the fall of the Jin dynasty, and was a time when southern and northern China had different governments. Although the north was already in the hands of the Wei dynasty since 386, the date of the beginning of this historical period is conventionally placed in the year 420, when the refugee Jin dynasty came to an end, being replaced by the first of the southern dynasties, the Liu-Song. Provenance: Purchased by the current owner in 2020 in London in an ancient art gallery (M. D.) . Previous, private British collector, owned before 70's. The Supplier warrants that he obtained this lot legally. Provenance statement seen by Catawiki. Important information. The seller guarantees that he is entitled to ship this lot.
