Billie Holiday, archive autograph letters signed, (30) hand-written and signed letters dating from 1939 to 1941, with envelopes, each addressed to Marilyn Moore, Holiday's friend and fellow jazz singer, most on 10"h x 8"w lined paper, a few smaller notes, variously signed "Billie" or B. Holiday", with one autographed photograph, enclosed in archival box with set of photocopies of contents, 15.5"l x 10.25"w x 3.25"d

Provenance: Christie's sale 2272 Fine Books and Manuscripts, June 24, 2009, lot 77

Notes/Literature: Holiday wrote relatively few letters and this is the largest group ever to come onto the market. Later, Marilyn Moore recorded one LP entitled "Moody Marilyn Moore" with a small jazz ensemble in 1957, but does not seem to have made others.
