Civil War Union veteran archive of Private Thomas H. Stones and his family. The archive dates from the 1860s to the 1920s. Items are displayed in riker mount cases. Archive includes:
Diary of Thomas Stones recording some of his experiences during the Civil War. Recorded in "The Lakeside Pencil Tablet No. 5" booklet. Includes a typed transcription of the diary.
P53 Enfield Musket brought back from the war by Stones. Musket is marked marked "Tower 1862" on the lockplate to the right of the royal crown insignia, stock is marked "R. & W. ASTON" near the underside of the wrist, stamped "35" on the top of the stock just above the butt plate. Length: 55".
Leather cap box.
Bayonet with sheath.
Piece of a belt buckle.

Private Thomas H. Stones served with Company A of the 117th Illinois Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. Stones was born in Mt. Hope Township, Illinois on March 30, 1844. He enlisted in McLean, IL on August 7, 1862. He was in the Red River campaign and participated in battles in Nashville, Pleasant Hill and other locations. He was discharged on August 5, 1865 at Camp Butler in Springfield, IL. After the war, he married Elvira Cunningham and was an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic and other veteran organizations. He died on February 11, 1921 and is buried at McLean Cemetery.
Condition Report: Very good, some wear to corners of photos. Some badge ribbons are frayed or discolored. Badge metal exhibits minor oxidation.
