Clarendon (Edward Hyde, Earl of) Continuation of the Life of Edward Earl of Clarendon: from the Restoration of the Royal Family in the Year 1660, to his Banishment in the Year 1667 inclusive , 2 vol., manuscript on laid paper in a neat cursive hand, "copied from the original manuscript in his own hand writing", c. 40 lines of text per page with catchwords, continuous pagination, broken hinges, leaves and gatherings detached but present, Pittsburgh auction receipt dated 1855 loosely inserted, bookplate of Stanley Keyes, lightly browned throughout, contemporary calf, boards detached, rubbed and worn, housed in a modern cloth drop-back box, folio, [eighteenth century].

⁂ A scarce near contemporary manuscript which seems to closely correspond to volumes 2 & 3 of The Life of Edward Earl of Clarendon, first published in 1759. Clarendon's life was intended as a companion volume to his 'History of the Rebellion and the Civil Wars in England'. Composed by Clarendon for the benefit of his children, c.1670, the present is very possibly a family copy. The present copy was perhaps used as an editor's or printer's copy in preparing the 1759 first edition, with corrections, revisions, excisions etc. to the text.
