English School, 18th Century
Young Girl with a Dog in a Forest
oil on canvas

canvas: 25 x 33 ½ in. (63.5 x 85.1 cm)
framed: 31 ¾ x 40 in. (80.6 x 101.6 cm)

Condition Report:
The canvas has been relined and is stable on its stretcher. There is an approx. one inch area of paint loss at the upper left corner, likely due to past frame abrasion. Some thinning to the darker pigments is evident, most visible in the hind legs of the dog. The background appears to have lost some of its definition, possibly as a result of the dirty varnish. There is a stable pattern of craquelure across the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals a very thick and milky varnish that somewhat impedes examination, but it does not appear to have been cleaned in quite some time. There seems to be evidence of a past repair to the area around the girl's right hand and forearm. Some additional touches of strengthening are evident here and there. In the area of the girl's face they appear to address the aforementioned craquelure. Offered in a decorative gilt frame.
