FACTORY ENGRAVED COLT MODEL 1878 HAMMER SHOTGUN.

Cal. 12 Ga. (2 5/8"). S# 1244. Bbls. 28 1/8" dramatic twist, are engraved “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.” on concave top rib. Top lever action is fitted w/ front spring locks w/ serpentine hammers. Action locks are engraved w/ sprays of scroll w/in line & geometric borders. Both lockplates are engraved w/ maker’s name. Engraving probably corresponds to a $3 extra charge. Rnd. knob pistol grip buttstock of crotch figured American walnut measures 14 3/8" over steel buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip. Matching splinter forend w/ inlet ebony tip has Colt’s adaptation of a Deely release. MEASUREMENTS: Bbls.; bore diameter: R .735, L .734. Restriction: R .016 (MOD), L .023 (MOD). Min. Wall Thickness: R .037, L .030. STOCK: LOP: 14 3/8", DAC: 1 15/16", DAH: 3 5/16". WEIGHT: 7 lbs. 15 oz. CONDITION: good as partially refinished. Bbls. retaining most of what is possibly factory brown w/ good definition to pattern, considerably darkened. Action & locks are a mostly gray brown patina w/ some traces of color where protected. Stocks refinished, wood slightly below metal. Sharp edges rounded, checkering recut. Bores are pitted throughout, action is slightly loose, locks are good. (01-17857/MGM106). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
