Where Chic Young's original newspaper feature kept the situations down-to-earth and squarely middle-class, the funnybooks often veered into bizarre slapstick. Here, Dagwood's resistance to a household chore leads to a missing-person report and a violent capture. Demands Dagwood: "Does the whole police force have to jump on me just because I don't want to mow a lawn?" The unbilled artist delivers a solid impression of Young's early-day style, to the finer detail of old-fashioned candlestick telephones (in 1954). Ink over graphite on Bristol board.
