Important Set of Four Very Fine and Rare Chippendale Carved Mahogany Side Chairs
Possibly the shop of Thomas Tufft
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1770
The set retaining a rich, dark, historic finish. Three of the four chairs with original slip seats, the fourth with a period slip seat. Chairs marked VI, VII, VIII, VIIII.
Height 38 1/2 inches

Condition Report:
Chair VI with slip seat VI: very good condition.
Chair VIII with slip seat VIII: very good condition.
Chair VII with slip seat VII: glue blocks replaced.
Chair XIII with slip seat VIIII: rear glue blocks replaced.

Chair VII: Glue blocks replaced. Break and repair to top of proper left corner of splat. Minor crack and disturbance to proper left of crest at juncture with stile. Old break to proper right stile at juncture of seat-rail. Disturbance and small loss to facade near top of proper left front leg. Buttons added to underside of feet. Triangular patch repair to proper left rear leg. With its original yellow pine slip seat, also marked VII. With glue repair to one corner of slip seat.
Chair XIII: Seat all yellow pine. Rear glue blocks replaced. Break and repair to scroll at top proper right corner of splat. Break and repair to junctures of crests and stiles. Seat rails re-pinned to rear stiles. Loss to approximately 1/2 inch of tip of proper left side knee return. Tip of proper left knee return reglued (if not replaced), same knee return with rubbed wear to inner edge. Proper right side knee return replaced. Abrasions to front knees and talons.
