SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR: SPANISH CAPTURED FLAGS.

[ translate ]

SOLD TO BENEFIT THE ACQUISITION FUND OF THE FINE ARTS MUSEUMS OF SAN FRANCISCO. LOTS 3 TO 12.
SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR: SPANISH CAPTURED FLAGS.
Spanish Merchant Marine Flag. [Captured in the Philippines, c.1898.] Two Spanish Merchant Marine Flags of Spain. Each 185 x 270 cm (6 x 9 feet). The flag made up of 3 horizontal yellow stripes divided by two horizontal red bands, each stripe stitched together, one flag stenciled on hoist "6 x 9 ft," metal grommets. Some creasing and slight fraying, a few small holes.
WITH: 2 other small Spanish flags, both cotton, one a "Bandera de Mochilla," a Spanish backpack flag, issued to troops in the Spanish Army, and used as a scarf or bandana; the other a small Spanish national flag.
Provenance: Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

These flags were in use for merchant ships of Spain from its inception in 1785, and used until 1931. These examples with metal grommets are likely from the 1890s, and were probably recovered from the Spanish-American War theater. Some examples were carried by United Sates Naval vessels, who would fly this flag as a courtesy salute when they were in Spanish ports or when Spanish ships were encountered around the world. The Merchant Marine flags have no makers mark, but a similar flag, dated earlier, is to be found in the H. Madaus collection, part of the Zaricor Collection. The Zaricor Flag Collection has two examples of the smaller Banderas, brought back by American troops, both originally donated to the de Young Museum of San Francisco, and de-accessioned in the 1980s.
