Condition Report:
The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Jan Davidsz. De Heem
Still life
Oil on panel, in a modern gilt wood frame with some wear

The oak support is well preserved. It is slightly convex, has evidence of minor wood worm and there has been minor loss along the very bottom edge.

The paint layer is stable and secure.

U-v light shows a campaign of restoration to the upper left quadrant of the composition, to the background, to mitigate thinness in the paint layer. Much of this restoration is excessive and insensitively applied. Further minor strengthening to the thinned paint can be detected under the vase and around the central pale narcissi, to the background.

The still life, itself, is very well preserved. Original energetic brushwork through the corn husk, ear of wheat, lemon rind and flower petals are in very good original condition and fine details are preserved.

The colours are strong and the chromatic and tonal values are retained.

Some of the darker passages, the shadows behind the roses and cornflower, have become naturally thinner over time allowing exposure of the pale ground colour.

No significant tonal improvement would be gained by removing the varnish.

The painting presents well.

Provenance:
Anonymous sale, Monaco, Sotheby's, 5 October 1980, lot 593 (as Abraham Mignon), for 130,000 FF, where acquired.
