Virgil is a contemporary Latin poet of the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the reign of Emperor Augustus. According to tradition 1, Virgil was born in Andes (which today bears the name Virgilio in his honor) , near Mantua, in Cisalpine Gaul, under the consulate of Crassus and Pompey, in a modest family. Current historians rather consider that he came from a bourgeois family, his mother Polla Magio being the daughter of a rich merchant and his father Vergilius Maro, whose praenomen is not known, being a small landowner from Mantua living from beekeeping, agriculture and livestock and who scrupulously watches over his studies.
