Zanzibar; City, Island, and Coast
By Burton, Richard Francis, 1821-1890
2 vols. folding map, 4 plans, 11 plates, xii, 503, vi, 519p. Hardcover in original chocolate brown cloth with gilt stamped design of an Indian on front covers. 23cm. Corners frayed. Recased with new inner hinges. Original endpapers preserved. Other restoration includes releasing the free front endpapers from the pastedowns along the gutter areas. Minor chipping and tears at ends of backstrip have been repaired. Binder's conservation report laid in. INSCRIBED in Lady Burton's hand ("To Dear Uncle Robert with the best love of Richard and Puss Burton, January 22, 1872. Garswood") on the free front endpaper in Volume I. From the John Ralph Willis Collection of Africana with his bookplate on the front pastedowns. We sold this book to Professor Willis in 1994 and re-purchased it after his death at the February 2010 Heritage auction of many of his African books. The Heritage description noted that Richard and Isabel Burton were married at Garwood, her Uncle Robert's home, in 1861 and that the Burtons stayed with or relied upon financial help from Isabel's Uncle Robert from time to time when their financial situation became particularly dire.
