From Antique to Contemporary: Islamic and Indian Art + Manuscripts at Roseberys, UK

High-quality paintings and artefacts from the Islamic and Indian heritage are set to take centre stage at Roseberys this month. Encompassing the varied artistic productions from these rich cultures, the specialist sale on October 22 will present a wide range of works from pottery and manuscripts to glass, decorative arts and contemporar art. The sale include a nine-lot group of works on paper by the celebrated Indian painter M.F. Husain. The sale also features Indian artworks owned by the late Victor Lownes, the American-born businessman who worked within multiple sectors of the Playboy enterprise.

In addition, a private collection of over 100 lots of Islamic manuscripts, miniatures and calligraphies spanning decades of collecting by one family will be offered predominately without reserve in a single-owner sale a day later on October 23.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s his art supported his political activism; however, his propaganda and support gave way to satire and criticism as the reality of the revolution’s aftermath departed from his more optimistic vision.
