Left: Antique-style lidded marble vase; Right: Marble sculpture of “Apollo Lyceus”

Antique-style lidded marble vase
Height: 49.5 cm. Base signed “B. Boschetti” and location “Roma”
Benedetto Boschetti was an Italian 19th Century sculptor who was born in 1820. This visionary and eclectic artist had a very popular shop in Via Condotti in Rome, where European aristocrats were fascinated by his precious sculptures, inspired by antique finds. He was also famous for his bronzes and exotic furnishings. All his artworks are characterized by great technical skill, creative flair, and precious elegance. Works by Benedetto Boschetti are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. loan: Gilbert 89512008). See Price Estimate…

Marble sculpture of “Apollo Lyceus”
Height: 138 cm. Total height: 190 cm. On a modern base.
The present lot shows a statue type of Apollo Lyceus (Apollo as wolf-god), originating with Praxiteles, one of the most famous sculptors of Ancient Greece in the 4th century before Christ. The wolf form of the Greek god Apollo was honored in ancient Athens especially at the Lyceum, a gymnasium and public meeting place which was housed in a grove named after the god.
The copies of this type of Apollo were especially popular among the Romans and have been found in both domestic and religious contexts and in interior and exterior settings. One of the Roman copies is held at the collections of the Louvre, and an Apollo marble sculpture of the same type is held at The Uffizi Galleries in Florence. See Price Estimate…

Left: Attributed to Vincent Sellaer, Susanna and the Elders; Right: Attributed to Gaspar van Wittel, View of the Colosseum in Rome

Attributed to Vincent Sellaer, Susanna and the Elders
Oil on panel. Parquetted. 105 x 84 cm.
The biblical theme of Susanna and the Elders of the Old Testament was especially popular among European painters in the 16th and 17th centuries. In fact, this story gave them the opportunity to display the female nude. The present work, attributed to the Italian-Flemish painter Vincent Sellaer, shows an interesting variation in the treatment of Susanna: the composition is focused on the psychological aspect of the scene, emphasizing on the thoughts of the woman, as it can be noticed in her face.
Vincent Sellaer was the principal artist active in the mid-16th century in Mechelen, a city which had become the cultural centre of the Netherlands during the reign of Margaret of Austria. The Lombard influence in his works would seem to indicate that he travelled to Northern Italy. See Price Estimate…

Attributed to Gaspar van Wittel, View of the Colosseum in Rome
Oil on canvas. 75 x 102 cm.
The present painting is attributed to the Dutch painter Gaspar van Wittel's also known as Vanvitelli or "Caspare degli Occhiali", whose work has been considered an important precedent to the urban veduta-painting, which reached its highest point during the 18th century. He was the first view painter in Italy and his subjects was very influential for many artists. His designs, which were based on sketches made from nature, were made to fit horizontal formats that allowed the artist to obtain panoramic perspectives.
This is a beautiful veduta of the Colosseum in Rome washed in a soft afternoon “Roman” light. The evocative views of the Colosseum became the most popular purchases for eighteenth-century travelers on the Grand Tour. See Price Estimate…

Attributed to Adam van Breen, Ice Amusements

Attributed to Adam van Breen, Ice Amusements
Oil on panel. Parquetted. 49 x 74 cm.
The winter landscapes with skaters are among the most well-known subjects of the Flemish painter Adam Van Breen. He was a Dutch Golden Age painter specialized in paintings filled with figures enjoying wintry landscapes, occasionally depicting views from specific locations in Amsterdam or The Hague.
In his crowded frozen canals, Van Breen built up a stock of lively figural types that appear repeatedly in his landscapes, with minor variations. See Price Estimate…

Left: Jan Brueghel the Younger, Large Bouquet; Right: Follower of Joos van Cleve, Saint Jerome in his study

Jan Brueghel the Younger, Large Bouquet
Oil on panel. Fragment. 90 x 59 cm.
This exquisite still life by the Flemish artist Jan Brueghel the Younger is depicted with an outstanding accuracy on every detail, displaying a great variety of flowers. Every petal is created painstakingly with delicate brushwork. In the 17th century flowers from Southern Europe and Asia were being imported into the Netherlandish as bulbs, sometimes at extortionate prices.
The blooms depicted include also the Semper Augustus, which was the rarest and most valuable of the high-end tulips during the Tulipomania. It was an extraordinary flower with dark blood-red streaks and flashes on white petals. See Price Estimate…

Follower of Joos van Cleve, Saint Jerome in his study
Oil on panel. 44 x 60 cm.
In this painting is depicted Saint Jerome in his study surrounded by objects symbolizing transience and death. The painting was a sensation, prefiguring the genre of memento mori, images that compelled contemplation of mortality. The Doctor of the Church is represented here by the powerful, concentrated and synthetic image of an old sage. His melancholy attitude and his gesture toward the skull suggest that the artist consciously emulated Albrecht Dürer’s influential Saint Jerome panel of 1521.
Similar depictions are held at the Prado in Madrid, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, the Museum Stockholm and the Staatliche Museen in Berlin. See Price Estimate…

Left: Henri Baptiste Lebasque, Portrait of a lady in red; Right: Gustave Loiseau, Le Pont Suspendu de Triel sur Seine

Henri Baptiste Lebasque, Portrait of a lady in red
Oil on canvas on panel. 49,5 x 33 cm. Signed lower right “Lebasque”.
Henri Baptiste Lebasque was a French post-impressionist artist admired for the intimacy of his subject matter and his unique delight in color and form. The main subjects of his paintings were cozy domestic genre scenes with jarringly modernist use of line and brush.
The sitter of the present painting is a young and beautiful woman in a red dress with a melancholic gaze. She is depicted with extensive and visible brush strokes of vibrant and expressive colors. See Price Estimate…

Gustave Loiseau, Le Pont Suspendu de Triel sur Seine
Oil on canvas. 60 x 81 cm. Signed and dated lower left “G. Loiseau 1915”.
This suggestive artwork was painted by the French Post-Impressionist artist Gustave Loiseau, mainly known for his landscapes and scenes of Paris. After a period of experimentation with Pointillism, Loiseau found his own vision of rural France. His canvases reveal an interest in creating a more melancholic vision, avoiding the intense light found in the work of the Impressionists. The artist used crosshatched strokes to describe light and forms, with a modern desire for painterly expression.
Loiseau’s works can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others. See Price Estimate…

John William Godward, A Happy Awakening

John William Godward, A Happy Awakening
Oil on canvas. 31.8 x 66.8 cm. Signed lower left and dated "JW Godward 1903".
John William Godward was one of the premier painters of the late Pre-Raphaelite style. He was born in Wimbledon, England, and was particularly known for his numerous paintings of beautiful young women in classical scenery. He was counted among the members of the "Marble School", known for its depictions of subjects drawn from ancient Greek and Roman life placed in elaborate settings, with especially careful and realistic rendering of details like marble and flowers, as in the present painting.
In this beautiful scene a young woman, awakened from her sleep, lies on a marble balcony seat. In the background, the azure blue sea is detected, below a clear sky. See Price Estimate…

Francesco Beda, Game of Billiards

Francesco Beda, Game of Billiards
Oil on canvas. Relined. 60 x 101 cm. Signed “F. Beda” at the bottom.
This exquisite painting by the Italian artist Francesco Beda shows a group of aristocrats playing the game of billiards in a Rococo interior. Beda was best known for his academic genre paintings and anachronistic subjects, with which he achieved significant success in the Empire and in England in the nineteenth century. He received numerous commissions from the aristocracy and the Imperial Court, notably the Empress Elizabeth and also numbered among his patrons, Bishop Strossmayer of Zagreb. See Price Estimate…

Giovanni Grubacs, Veduta over the Bacino Canal to St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace

Giovanni Grubacs, Veduta over the Bacino Canal to St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace
Oil on canvas. 80 x 119 cm. Signed lower left.
This artwork by Giovanni Grubacs, a celebrated nineteenth century painter of Venetian scenes, shows one of Venice’s most beautiful square from the viewpoint of the San Marco Basin.

In the background are visible the dome of the Basilica di San Marco, the clock tower and the reddish bell tower. See Price Estimate…

Adriaen van Stalbemt, The Triumph of Neptune with Amphitrite
Oil on copper. 47 x 64 cm.
This brightly colored and minutely detailed painting on copper shows the mythological scene of the Triumph of Neptune and Amphitrite, surrounded by Tritons and Nereids. The author is the Flemish painter Adriaen van Stalbemt who is known for his landscapes with mythological and allegorical scenes. In 1610 he was included to the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp.
His style has been described as eclectic, as it shows the influences of various artists such as Jan Brueghel the Elder, Jan Brueghel the Younger, Hendrick van Balen, Paul Bril and Adam Elsheimer. See Price Estimate…

Jean-Gabriel Domergue, In the Lodge
oil on canvas. 93 x 75 cm. Signed "Jean Gabriel Domergue".
Jean-Gabriel Domergue was a French painter who specialized in portraits of Parisian women and claimed to be “the inventor of the pin-up”. He became the favourite artist of the upper-classes and the aristocracy and was commissioned to paint the portraits of many notable Parisian ladies of the time. He was also well known as a designer of art deco posters with elegant women as an eye-catcher. See Price Estimate…

Left: David Vinckboons, Banqueting Scene; Right: Marten van Cleve, Family Scene in a Flemish House

David Vinckboons, Banqueting Scene
oil on wood. 16.7 x 32.3 cm.
The elegant banquet represented in this painting was depicted by the Flemish artist David Vinckboons, whose artworks have reached high estimates recently. He is credited with producing some of the earliest banqueting scenes in the Northern-Netherlands.
In the present work, the artist makes no actual reference to the Parable of Prodigal Son, although the scene is overtly one of indulgence and moral decay. It could be interpreted as an allegory of the five senses, with a reference to the sense of hearing in the figure of the musician and a suggestive reference to the sense of touch in the embracing couple at the center of the composition. Marten van Cleve, Family Scene in a Flemish House
oil on oak wood. 76 x 84.5 cm.
The painting is closely thematic proximity to the bodies set up by Van Cleve to 1555 "A Flemish household".
The viewer's gaze is directed first and foremost to the image center, next to the numerous details, such as an onion pile on the bottom left, dried herring on the back wall or a fruit basket on a shelf. A young mother sitting in an infant chair on the floor and holding her naked baby on her lap. The white of the cloth and the womanhood shine out of clay color out of the overall impression. Similarly, the other figures of the family idyll are highlighted. Behind - a young man, based on a fagot leans forward slightly. Trousers and cap in bright red, let him be seen as a father.
