Based on the 3200 Spyder and introducing a new, naturally aspirated V8 developed by Ferrari, the 4200 Spyder is more than just a restyled 3200 Spyder. In terms of its appearance, the only disappointment concerned the boomerang-style rear lights which Maserati had to give up to meet the type approval requirements of the American market, where the make was set to make its comeback. Under the bonnet, the V8 now developed 390bhp and could rev out to 7600rpm, making it a joy to listen to. The six-speed manual gearbox was now mounted at the rear, while the optional ‘Cambiocorsa' sequential transmission satisfied thrill-seekers thanks to the speed of its changes.. It should be remembered that this splendid coupé could be enjoyed four-up, with extensive standard equipment and in luxurious comfort.
