The hallmark on the present lot, Lingde Tang ('The Hall of Virtue'), may be associated with the Lingde Tang School in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, which was founded in 1883 by Zhang Zhidong (1837-1909) while he was the Governor (Xunfu) of Shanxi. An avid advocate of controlled reform, Zhang summarised his method in the phrase 'Chinese Learning as Substance, Western Learning for Application', and introduced his principle into the curricula of the many academies he had founded in different cities.
