Circle of Claude-Joseph Vernet,
French 1714-1789-
The Old Port of Marseille;
oil on canvas, bears signature and date 'G. Vernet 1752[?]' (lower left), 25 x 30.3 cm.
Provenance:
Purchased by the father of the present owner in the 1950s.
Note:
The present work was undoubtedly inspired by the atmospheric coastal scenes of Claude-Joseph Vernet and Charles François Lacroix de Marseille (c.1700-1782). Here, a frenetic sense of bustle and activity is created by the dense staffage who are hard at work, unloading and refilling boats, and lugging bags of goods above their heads.
