Inspired by the pictorial language of Paul Cézanne, Maurice de Vlaminck searched for new forms of artistic expression after 1907 and gradually moved away from his previous Fauvist period. The artist had recently visited a Cézanne retrospective at the Salon d’Automne in Paris. The work ‘Paysage aux trois cyprès’ from 1912, is an example of the resulting newfound ‘Cézanneseque’ approach to his landscape depictions. As Vlaminck adopted a more restrained palette in comparison to his previous work, form and structure gained increasing importance. He experimented with simplified forms and reduced the landscape to its essential elements. In the present work, Vlaminck has rendered the facades and roofs of the houses on the hillside solely through simple geometric outlines and has delineated the sky and the vegetation in the background with angular brushstrokes. The large cypress tree located in the centre of the picture structures the composition and further reveals Vlaminck's new emphasis on form.

The painting ‘Paysage aux trois cyprès’ can be understood as an important work both within the biographical context of Vlaminck as well as his stylistic development, and is a characteristic example of the beginning of his new expressive approach.
