KILLADOON HOUSE, PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT IRISH ESTATE

STUDIO OF CLAUDE-JOSEPH VERNET
Avignon 1714 - 1789 Paris
CAPRICCIO VIEW OF NAPLES, WITH WASHERWOMEN AND FISHERMEN IN THE FOREGROUND; AND A CAPRICCIO VIEW OF THE TEMPLE OF THE SYBIL IN TIVOLI, WITH A WATERFALL AND A SHEPHERD WITH HIS FLOCK IN THE FOREGROUND

a pair, both oil on canvas, in carved and gilt wood frames
the former: 73.5 x 97.5 cm.
the latter: 73.8 x 98.7 cm.
(2)

Condition Report:
The canvases are both lined, the paint surfaces are slightly dirty and the varnishes are slightly discoloured and uneven. Both paintings will respond well to cleaning and are in overall good condition.
The former: the edge of the lined canvas is clearly visible along the upper margin. Visible retouchings are also visible in the upper left part of the sky along an area of more pronounced craquelure, possibly in part caused by the stretcher. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms this and further reveals some strengthening in the tree trunk, branches and leaves of the two trees on the right. There is also some retouching in the upper right corner and scattered along the lower margin, but otherwise the main composition appears to be largely untouched.
The latter: the edge of the lined canvas is clearly visible along the upper, left and lower margins. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals pin-prick retouchings scattered through the sky with more concentrated areas in the upper left corner, in the centre to an 'I' shaped area measuring approx. 15 x 5 cm., and to an area in the upper right corner. There are also dense areas of retouching along the left margin, small areas scattered in the landscape and in the lower right foreground, and some small strengthenings in the tree on the right. These have all been sensitively executed and do not distract from the legibility of the image.
